HP High Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

Himachal Pradesh was established through the amalgamation of 26 Shimla and four Punjab hill States into a Centrally Administered Area on April 15, 1948. On April 1, 1954, the territories of Bilaspur were also merged into Himachal Pradesh, with its headquarters in Shimla. The Chief Commissioner, Mr. N. C. Mehta, led the administration, assisted by his deputy, Mr. E. Penderal Moon, ICS. An advisory council was formed on September 30, 1948, to advise the Chief Commissioner on administrative matters. The Himachal Pradesh (Courts) Order, 1948, was promulgated by the Central Government on August 15, 1948, establishing the Court of Judicial Commissioner in Shimla.

Himachal Pradesh High Court

The Court of Judicial Commissioner, with the powers of a High Court, began functioning on August 15, 1948. Two Courts of District and Sessions Judges and 27 subordinate Courts were also established. In 1967, the Himachal Bench of Delhi High Court replaced the Court of Judicial Commissioner, functioning from the old High Court building called “Revenswood.” Himachal Pradesh became a state in 1971, establishing its own High Court with headquarters at “Revenswood,” Shimla, led by the first Chief Justice, Hon’ble Mr. Justice M. H. Beg, and two Hon’ble Judges, Hon’ble Mr. Justice D. B. Lal and Hon’ble Mr. Justice C. R. Thakur.

Over the years, several distinguished jurists served as Chief Justices, including Hon’ble Mr. Justice R. S. Pathak, Hon’ble Mr. Justice A. M. Khanwilkar, and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant. The Old High Court Building, “Ravenswood,” witnessed the elevation of notable judges like Hon’ble Mr. Justice M. H. Beg and Hon’ble Mr. Justice R. S. Pathak to the Supreme Court of India. Hon’ble Mr. Justice R. S. Pathak even served as a Judge of the International Court of Justice at Hague.

At present, Hon’ble Mr. Justice L. Narayana Swamy is the Chief Justice, leading the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, which consists of thirteen Judges, including the Chief Justice, with nine actively serving Judges. Despite its size, the High Court of Himachal Pradesh holds a prestigious position in the judicial landscape of India, progressing under the able leadership of Chief Justice L. Narayana Swamy.
